Original umpires replaced for Test

The First Test between Australia and Sri Lanka was off to an inauspicious start when days before the start, the International Cricket Council had to send an urgent message for two replacement umpire for the Test.

Steve Bucknor and Aleem Dar who made a mockery of the World Cup final between the same two teams in Caribbean early this year, were the orginal umpires nominated. But believe it or not,the twosome had not got their visas processed in time for the opening Test.

The ICC had to send a frantic message and get Rudi Koertzen of South Africa and Tony Hill of New Zealand to make an emergency landing and stand in the Test.

Mike Procter, the former South African allrounder is the match referee.

All officials had been informed of this series for many years, and Bucknor and Dar cannot feign ignorance and that they waited for so long and until it was too late to apply for their visas was unacceptable.

Cricket”s umpiring fraternity has taken several blows in recent times because of Darrel Hair’’s court case.
