Vaas axed for super slinger | Courier Mail

SRI Lanka was rocked last night, with its greatest fast bowler Chaminda Vaas axed and controversial batsman Marvan Atapattu linked to a rebel Twenty20 league. The sacking of Vaas, Sri Lanka's most successful fast bowler with 320 Test wickets, is a bitter blow for the affable veteran who would have played his 100th Test today at Bellerive Oval.

It is believed a disconsolate Vaas was told of his axing yesterday, with Sri Lanka preferring to unleash super slinger Lasith Malinga to unsettle Australia's top order.

In another development which unsettled Sri Lanka, the rebel Indian Cricket League announced it had signed Atapattu, the veteran batsman who branded Sri Lankan selectors "muppets" and "jokers".

Atapattu's availability for today's Test was thrown into doubt, because the Sri Lankan Cricket Board had indicated it would ban any player who signed with the rebel league.

However, an ICL spokesman said Atapattu had been erroneously included in the list of stars as the result of a computer error. Nonetheless, the Hobart Test is almost certain to be Atapattu's Test swansong as he is believed to be on the verge of signing with the ICL and he will be disciplined over his outburst at the national selectors.

But it was the sacking of the popular Vaas on the verge of his 100th Test that was the main talking point among players last night.
